If Germany is our neighbor, it is sometimes overlooked by long-distance riders, who prefer Tyrolean peaks, southern sunshine, or the exotic appeal of Norway or Scotland. Except for one or another short—and beautiful—getaway in the Eifel or the Black Forest...
Yet our German cousins are spoiled: there are the beautiful Hanseatic cities of the north (Hamburg, Lübeck), Berlin, the capital, or the lovely region of "Saxon Switzerland" near Dresden in the east.
But it's of course the south that will delight riders. Between Baden-Baden and Freiburg, the Baden Wine Route offers postcard landscapes, just like the magnificent Black Forest, a bit further east. And Bavaria is a concentrated dose of pure happiness, with its half-timbered towns and villages straight out of a postcard, such as Heidelberg, Rothenburg, Regensburg, or Bamberg.
South of beautiful Munich, there's the grail: the German Alpine Road, which has little to envy the mythical routes on the Austrian side. Between Berchtesgaden, starting point for the magnificent Rossfeld Panorama Road, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, at the foot of the famous Zugspitze, it's absolute bliss, with mountains, valleys, lakes and forests. The thrill continues all the way to Lake Constance in the southwest, and notably its lakeside town of Lindau... The treasure hunt is on!
