A thousand twists away from the beaches of Algarve, there is another Portugal, filled with rugged valleys, endless vineyards, "quintas", forests, and even... mountains! It's in this Portugal, the one in the north, that we take you to riders' paradise. Starting from Porto, with its magnificent old town, the Douro Valley is a concentrated dose of beauty.
You must get lost on the small winding roads overlooking the river, thanks to the many "miradouros" offering vertiginous views over terraced vineyards. Around the bend, you'll find adorable little villages where everyone lives to the rhythm of Porto!
Further east, the river and nature become wild. The Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, on the border between Spain and Portugal (Salamanca isn't that far) unrolls endless hairpins, to be enjoyed without moderation—unlike Porto... What a joy to stop in these charming historic villages perched along the border, like Belmonte, Monsanto, or Sortelha.
Just a short distance away, the Serra da Estrella, whose highest pass reaches 1,900m, offers breathtaking roads and views. In this mountain universe hide a few gems, like the village of Piodão, clinging to a hillside. This region, between the Douro and the Tagus, is accessible from Porto or Lisbon, via beautiful Coimbra. North of Braga, at the edge of Galicia, Peneda-Gerês National Park is an inestimable treasure, as is Montesinho Natural Park, further east, near Bragança.
