Riding the United States by motorcycle means wide open spaces, legendary roads and a biker culture like nowhere else. But a motorcycle trip across the Atlantic needs preparation. Here is what you need to know before you go.
Paperwork
- ESTA: Belgian and French nationals travel visa-free but must obtain an ESTA authorisation online before departure.
- Driving licence: bring your motorcycle licence (category A) and an International Driving Permit, recommended and sometimes required by rental companies.
- Insurance: check the liability cover included in the rental and take out good travel insurance (medical costs, repatriation).
Renting a bike
Most travellers rent a motorcycle in the USA rather than shipping their own. Rental companies offer Harley-Davidson, as well as BMW, Indian or Honda depending on the agency. Book early for high season and check the excess, mileage and one-way drop-off conditions.
Rules of the road
- Helmets: the law varies from state to state. Some do not require them for adults, but we advise you to always wear one.
- Speed limits are in miles per hour and strictly enforced.
- Four-way stops: at these junctions, first to arrive is first to go.
- Lane splitting is only legal in California, and a few states only allow filtering when traffic is stopped.
When to go and where to ride?
Spring and early autumn are ideal in the Southwest. Summer suits the Rockies, Colorado and Yellowstone, where some roads such as the Pikes Peak highway (4,302 m) are only open in the warm season. The Blue Ridge Mountains in the East are superb in autumn. Mind the altitude: above 3,000 m, both bike and rider lose power.
Tips from bikers
- Plan daily legs of 250 to 350 km to enjoy the scenery.
- Pack gear for big temperature swings: desert in the morning, snowy pass in the afternoon.
- Fill up whenever you can in the West: petrol stations can be more than 150 km apart.
