French-speaking culture, wild nature, the St. Lawrence River and fishing villages: Eastern Canada offers a road trip that is both exotic and familiar. Here is how to plan it.
Montreal and Quebec City
Most trips start in Montreal, a lively, cosmopolitan city. A few hours away, Quebec City charms with its fortified Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Château Frontenac overlooking the river.
Charlevoix, Tadoussac and the Saguenay Fjord
Along the St. Lawrence, the Charlevoix region offers mountains plunging into the river. In Tadoussac, you can watch whales from May to October, and the Saguenay Fjord is one of the finest in the country.
The Gaspé Peninsula
The Gaspé Peninsula, with its famous Percé Rock, cliffs and villages, is a must for those with a little more time.
The Maritime Provinces
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island form the Maritimes. Here you discover the Bay of Fundy, famous for some of the highest tides in the world, the scenic Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, and the Acadian heritage.
When to go?
From June to September to enjoy every region. In late September and early October, Indian summer and the autumn colours are spectacular.
How long?
Allow 10 days for Montreal, Quebec City and Charlevoix, two weeks to add the Gaspé, and three weeks for a grand tour to the Maritimes.
Our Eastern Canada tours, self-drive or by coach, are designed by our Canada specialist and adapted to your wishes.
