A self-drive tour (fly & drive) is the best way to discover the United States: the freedom to stop wherever you like, spectacular roads and varied stops. Here are our tips for a smooth trip.
1. Apply for your ESTA
For a tourist trip, Belgian and French travellers need an electronic travel authorisation (ESTA) before departure. Apply several weeks ahead, only on the official website.
2. Don't underestimate distances
The USA is huge. Two parks may look close on the map, but they are often several hours apart. Plan reasonable daily legs so you can enjoy the visits.
3. Choose the right vehicle
Automatic transmission is the norm. An SUV is comfortable for long distances and park roads, without being essential on classic itineraries.
4. Learn a few driving rules
Speeds are in miles per hour, at "4-way stops" the first to arrive goes first, and in most states you may turn right on a red light after a full stop unless a sign says otherwise. Never overtake a stopped school bus.
5. Book early near the parks
Around Yosemite, the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone, accommodation sells out fast in summer. The earlier you book, the closer you sleep to the sights.
6. Consider the national parks pass
If you visit several parks, the annual "America the Beautiful" pass is often better value than individual entries.
7. Fill up regularly
In the desert and some remote areas, gas stations are rare. Never let the tank run too low.
8. Start early in the morning
The light is better, the sights less crowded and, in the Southwest, the heat more bearable.
9. Plan for tips
In restaurants, a 15 to 20% tip is customary, as service is generally not included.
10. Keep some free time
The best memories often come from the unexpected: a viewpoint, a roadside diner, a chance encounter. Don't fill every minute of the programme.
