A coastal road winding above the sea, islands reached by ferry, historic towns and turquoise lakes: Croatia is an ideal motorcycle destination, just a few days' ride from Belgium.
Istria and Kvarner
In the north, the Istrian peninsula blends Italian influences, hilltop villages like Motovun and small roads through the vineyards. Further south, the Kvarner bay and its islands, such as Rab or Krk, are reached by ferry or bridge.
The Adriatic Highway
The Jadranska magistrala follows the coast for hundreds of kilometres, with the sea on one side and mountains on the other. Its bends and views make it one of Europe's most beautiful coastal roads to ride.
Plitvice and Krka lakes
Inland, the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park lines up sixteen lakes linked by waterfalls. Closer to the coast, Krka National Park also has superb falls.
Dalmatia: Split and Dubrovnik
In Split, the old town is built inside Emperor Diocletian's palace. Further south, Dubrovnik, the "pearl of the Adriatic", is best seen from its city walls.
When to go?
May, June and September are the best months: pleasant temperatures, quieter roads and ferries easier to book than in July-August.
Good to know
- Croatia has been part of the Schengen area and has used the euro since 2023.
- Motorways are tolled, but the coastal road is free and far more beautiful.
- In summer, ride early in the morning to avoid the heat.
