Towering fjords, winding roads, waterfalls and ferries: Norway is one of Europe's finest motorcycle destinations. Here are the roads and tips to prepare your trip.
The legendary roads
- Trollstigen (the Trolls' Ladder): 11 hairpins carved into the cliff, with a waterfall as a backdrop.
- Ørnevegen (the Eagle Road): its bends drop down to the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord.
- The Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsvegen): 8 km of bridges hopping from islet to islet above the ocean.
- Sognefjellet: the highest mountain road pass in Northern Europe (1,434 m), between glaciers and lakes.
Fjords not to miss
Besides Geiranger, the Nærøyfjord, a narrow arm of the Sognefjord, is also UNESCO-listed. Further south, the Lysefjord and the famous Preikestolen offer one of the most photographed views in the country.
When to go?
The riding season runs from June to early September. Some mountain roads, such as Trollstigen, are only open in the warm season. In June and July the days are very long, perfect for enjoying the scenery late into the evening.
Tips for riding in Norway
- Ferries are part of the journey: they are frequent and give you a break between legs.
- Respect speed limits: fines are very high and the blood alcohol limit is 0.2 g/l.
- Rain and warm gear are essential, even in midsummer.
- Allow plenty of time: roads are narrow and winding, and you will stop often to admire the views.
